Message from the County Commissioner

July 2010

I am pleased with the numbers of young people from across the County attending GlosCamp 2010; 220 Scouts and 80 Explorer Scouts plus a leader team of 60! There will also be an international feel at the Camp as we have Scouts from Denmark joining the event.I am planning to be on site from the Wednesday evening.

This year's "Survival Skills" weekend proved to be bigger than ever with nearly a hundred Scouts and Explorer Scouts taking part. After a wet start on the Saturday morning, the weather improved and no-one got wet at night! On the first night, Scouts slept under tarpaulins before moving into shelters, made from natural materials, on the second night. All cooking was done on open fires without utensils and included gutting fish and skinning rabbits. My thanks to the very experienced team that ran the weekend and especially to Major Tom Wills, our County President, for letting us use Misarden Park once again.

This year's Malvern Challenge event was successful for three Gloucestershire Troops:

41st Gloucester - "Leaking Water Tube"

22nd Gloucester - "Water Carry Obstacle"

Eastcombe  - "Slider Glide"

William (1st Dursley Scouts) was the individual winner of the Talent Competition. William played saxophone and I am trying to "book him" to play at this year's County AGM (Saturday 17th July at Shurdington Community Centre at 11:30am).

And finally … do have a great summer and enjoy your Scouting camps.

Tom Harding

County Commissioner
