Scouting in Gloucestershire: Helping young people reach their full potential

News: Air Activity Weekend

Air Activity Weekend - Sept 2009

Last weekend (25-27 September 2009) a group of thirty Scouts from across Worcestershire and Gloucestershire reached new heights as they took part in two days of aeronautical activities at a private air-strip near Pershore. The event was organised by the Scout Association working in partnership with the Light Aircraft Association and aimed to introduce the Scouts, aged between 11 and 14, to a wide range of skills associated with aeronautics.

During the weekend the Scouts studied safety at airfields, aircraft instrumentation, aircraft controls and handling, navigation and meteorology. There was a variety of aircraft at the airstrip during the weekend to help the Scouts experience the excitement of powered flight.

All agreed that the high-light of the weekend was putting their new skills into practice as they navigated for a pilot during a half hour flight over Worcestershire and neighbouring counties.

When talking about the event, the UK Scout Association's County Commissioner for Gloucestershire, Tom Harding, said "Scouting aims to provide young people with a varied, challenging and enjoyable programme of activities to help them really get the most out of life. This weekend combined the traditional activity of Scout camping with the opportunity to try something new. Some of the Scouts taking part may never have been in an aircraft before, and for them it was a real adventure, while for others it may be a chance to develop an existing interest in powered flight."
