COUNTY CAVING WEEKEND

19 - 21 March

 

Weekend in Forest of Dean exploring the many exciting cave systems in the area. Indoors at Beaver Lodge, Parkend with food provided. Lead by the experienced members of the County Caving Team.

9 - 11 April

 

A weekend on narrow boats on the Grand Union Canal.  Learn to steer the boat and work the locks.

COUNTY EXPEDITION TRAINING

12 - 14 March (W1) AND 

16 - 18th April (W2)

Choose ONE of these options and show your choice clearly on application form: 

1. Expedition Challenge: (Scouts) W1: Training** W2: Expedition (hiking with day kit and camping at Cranham). 

2. Platinum + DofE Bronze hike: (Explorers) W1: Training** & practice hike. W2 Expedition (hiking with full kit and camping at Cranham). 

3. Diamond Training & DofE Silver+ Practice Expedition: (Explorers/Network) This can be followed by a two night expedition at Glos Camp [7 - 14 August]. W1 can be used for training**. W2 can be used for a practice expedition but a two night practice hike is also required. 

.

**Training will include map reading, compass work, route planning, first aid, hike camping, cooking, kit check, Highway & County Codes, emergency procedures etc. Hikes Away Staged Activity Badge: All the above options will also count towards this.

18 April 

 

The opportunity for Scouts and Explorer Scouts to experience a scuba dive in the safety of a swimming pool. Sessions last for approx one hour (includes snorkelling) at  Whitecross Leisure Centre, Lydney. Sessions are run by PADI qualified instructors.

COUNTY MOUNTAIN WEEKEND

30 April - 3 May

 

Bank Holiday weekend in the Lake District. Transport, indoor accommodation & food provided. This weekend will offer the opportunity for two full days mountain walking, and the possible options of scrambling, gorge walking and/or rock climbing. Suitable for Scouts of all abilities, aged 12 and over, possibly younger with experience and by prior arrangement with the organisers. 

This weekend could count towards the Explorer Scout Mountain Activities Badge or the Scout Hillwalker Badge and Adventure Challenge. 

 

Conditions permitting, it may be possible for more experienced Explorers to spend a lightweight night out in the hills so please state if you are interested in this option.

Participant need to attend both weekends to complete the County Scuba Open Water Course.

COUNTY WATER SPORTS WEEKEND

8 and 9 May

 

(Non-residential)  You must be able to attend both days and be a confident swimmer able to swim 50m in light clothing and able to keep afloat for 5 minutes. 

 

Venue: South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre. All equipment and instruction provided. 

 

Choose ONE of the following 4 options. Show your choice clearly on the application form:

 

1. Sailing: learn to sail and gain RYA level 1 award - a start on the way to the Dinghy Sailing Scout Activity Badge £59


2. Windsurfing: learn to windsurf and on completing the Royal Yachting Association National Windsurfing Scheme Level 1 gain the Scout Watersports Activity Badge FULL


3. Snorkelling: learn how to snorkel and explore beneath the lake and on completing the Snorkel Diver Award of the British Sub-aqua Club gain the Scout Watersports Activity Badge £59


4. Canoeing/kayaking: learn to kayak and canoe and on completing British Canoe Union's Paddlepower Passport gain the Scout Canoeist Activity Badge FULL

COUNTY SURVIVAL SKILLS WEEKEND

29 - 31 May

 

Held at Miserden Park (the home of our County President Major Tom Wills). 

 

We will be ‘surviving’ in an area of outstanding beauty.

 

Show clearly which course you are interested in on your application form.

1. Survival Skills (novices) – The original basic course leading to the Scout Activity Badge. An action packed weekend including cooking over open fires without pots and pans; building and sleeping in a bivouac; learning all about surviving in the great outdoors. Not for the youngest Scouts however as it is quite a demanding weekend. £30

 

2. Bushcraft & Survival 1 (more experienced) – for those who have already done a basic survival course.  - FULL

 

3. Bushcraft & Survival 2 (for those who have already done B&S1) Take your skills to even higher levels.  £30

 

4. Nomads This is a really advanced course on which you ‘survive’ with just the basics. It is only open to those who have already completed B&S and is by invitation only. FULL

25 - 27 June 

 

The MALVERN CHALLENGE & the more testing COTSWOLD CHALLENGE both 7 mile activity hikes - with loads of activities and events through out the weekend.

Sun Run 2010

2 - 4 July 

Midsummer Weekend open to all older members of the Scouting and Guiding (aged 15 upwards).  As the sun sets race, stroll, skip, hop or crawl your way round the route back to Cleeve Hill in time for sun rise 26 / 13 miles later!

The County AGM will take place at Shurdington Community Centre on 17 July.  11.30 - 2.30pm.  A buffet lunch will be served after the meeting.

Have you heard of this orchestra? . . . Some say it is the “Best Kept Secret” of the Scout Association. The Orchestra has actually been in existence for over 33 years!! Application forms are now available to enroll for the 2010 orchestra course in Pudsey, Nr Leeds, West Yorkshire. A one week residential course with full board

County Chief Scout's Award Reception

An evening to celebrate the achievements of all those who have gained the Chief Scout's Gold, Platinum or Diamond Award in academic year 2009/10.

 

D.C.'s and D.E.S.C.'s are asked to ensure that details (name address and award gained) are sent to the event administrator (Kevin Brewer), no later that 20 August 2010 so that invitations can be issued in good time.
