FROM THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER

It has been a really good month for positive media coverage across the County.  A couple of noteworthy examples include: Peter Duncan's interviewed with BBC Radio Gloucestershire about the fantastic growth in Scouting that the county recorded last year, placing Gloucestershire in the top ten of counties showing the biggest increase in the number of young people joining Scouting in 2007. Earlier in the same day there were interviews with a group

of Scouts from around the county who had all joined the movement in the past year.  Press coverage of newly opened sections around the county, and of exciting events and expeditions has also raised the profile of Scouting across Gloucestershire.

One of a number of tasks I wanted to do in my first few months as CC, was to spend an evening with each of the 8 Districts: I have so far ‘visited’ Stroud & Tetbury and Cotswold Vale Districts. Both evenings were most enjoyable as I ‘toured’ round visiting Colonies, Packs, Troops and Units – many thanks for making me so welcome and above all, thanks for all you are doing to give the Young People such a good time.

I am currently working closely with D.C.'s, discussing a new Support Structure. We are looking at the type of structure needed now to support D.C.'s, District Teams and Adults working with young people.

We clearly need to review the current structure which depends largely on Section A.C.C.'s and A.D.C.'s. The challenge we have is the difficulty in a number of cases to appoint A.C.C.'s and A.D.C.'s! Therefore, how do we support Section Leaders? I am hoping to be in a position to finalise the Support Structure after the next D.C.'s meeting at the end of May.

You will be aware of the KidsOutdoors initiative through the Gazette and Scouting Magazine – we have decided to ‘have a go’ locally!!

Two Activity Days are planned at Cranham for 28 May and 20 August 2008. The days are aimed at 7 – 12 year olds. The 28 May is a ‘pilot’ and numbers are limited to 40, so when you receive the information you will need to return the registration form promptly!
