FROM THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER
I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter: we can now look forward to lighter evenings and warmer days!  It’s a good time of year to finalise our plans for camps and outdoor activities. If you have any "slots" in your summer programme do remember the excellent facilities at the County Scouting Centre at Cranham, either for a camp or a day or evening visit. The new traversing wall and challenge course are proving very popular particularly with our younger members.

There is also soon to be a new portacabin (which sleeps 12 – accommodated in 3 rooms) to replace the one "washed away" last year.

Census – It was extremely pleasing to see this year's census figures. There has been an increase in ever District and for the County this represents a 7.2% increase in membership: Gloucestershire now has over 5,300 members!

Group Scout Leaders – There are a couple of special events for Group Scout LEaders that I would like to recommend.

Gilwell Open Days – 3 dates have been published for this year 19th May, 10th September and 6th December. They are popular and very worthwhile. To book at place on one fo the day contact  tricia.edwards@scout.org.uk or telephone 020 8433 7131. There is no charge for these days, which offer an insight into the resources and support at headquarters and the work carried out by the staff at Gilwell.

Group Scout Leader Forums – these proved very successful when held a couple of years ago and the Headquarters Team have decided to arrange some more this year. Our nearest is in Bristol on 29th November 2008. If this date is inconvenient there are 2 further Forums taking place in our Region on 28th September at Poole and 31st January at Plymouth.  More details will be circulated later, but in the meantime please get the dates into your diary.

Finally – I’m looking forward to attending a number of St George’s Day events around the County on 27th April; if I’m not at yours this year then I hope to be next year!

Tom Harding, County Commissioner
